Police in Thailand have arrested several Buddhist monks after a raid on their temple uncovered multiple s£x toys and led to positive drug tests for m£thamphetamine.

The arrests happened on January 27, 2026, at the Phrom Sunthon Monastery in Chonburi province. Authorities say the monks violated their strict monastic vows by keeping banned items—including the s£x toys—inside the temple grounds.

The monks taken into custody are:

  • Phra Supachai Jantawong, 35
  • Phra Wirat Mukdasanit, 45
  • Phra Thanapol Maison, 59

During the raid, officers conducted drug tests on the monks, and all three tested positive for methamphetamine (crystal meth).

Further investigation revealed that one of the individuals involved in running the temple was a Karen national who was not registered in Thailand’s civil records system.

Following their arrest, all four monks have been defrocked (stripped of their monastic status) and permanently banned from the Buddhist religion.

Colonel Saksilp Kamnoedsin from the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) in Chonburi explained that the raid was triggered by complaints from local villagers. Residents had reported suspected dr*g use and even possible f!rearm activity taking place on the temple grounds.

He said: “The three monks found to be using drugs will be sent to the police and relevant authorities for rehabilitation. The abbot will be handed over to the police for questioning and then deported to his country of origin”

An alleged drug seller identified as Supachai has claimed that he had been using methamphetamine for health-related reasons.

According to reports, Supachai said he had been taking the drug for about three years, explaining that he used it to deal with body pain caused by diabetes and high blood pressure.

“It’s for relieving nerve pain. When the pain is really bad, I take these kinds of pills. But I only use it for really severe pain”

Authorities have confirmed that three monks involved in the case will be sent to a drug rehabilitation centre.

Officials also revealed that the abbot has been handed over to immigration authorities for further investigation.
