TEWU demands 50% pay rise to cushion workers

The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) is calling for a 50 per cent increase in base pay as organised labour prepares to enter fresh salary negotiations with the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations.

The union argues that the relentless rise in the cost of living, coupled with higher utility tariffs and fuel prices, has eroded the real value of public sector wages, leaving many workers struggling to survive.

TEWU insists that only a significant adjustment will restore fairness and shield employees from the current economic pressures.

“The situation is unbearable. Workers cannot keep pace with the rising cost of living, and anything short of a substantial pay rise will not be enough,” the union stressed.

Responding to the demand, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, acknowledged the concerns raised and assured that the government will give the proposal due consideration.

He added that while the administration remains committed to supporting workers, any decision must take into account the country’s fiscal realities.
