Tanzanian legislators have been involved in a road accident while heading to Mombasa for the East Africa Community Parliamentary Games.

According to a statement issued by the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula on Friday December 6, a bus collided with a lorry leading to the Members of Parliament sustaining injuries.

The accident occurred at Mbande area, Kongwa District in Dodoma Region.

“One bus carrying some of our colleagues from Tanzania was involved in an accident. We have no fatalities, but some injuries and have been taken to hospital and are being attended to,” Wetangula said.

Wetangula issues update on accident involving Tanzanian legislators

Further, Wetang’ula assured the public that a more detailed update would be provided upon arrival in Mombasa, where the games’ organizing team would share additional information. He extended wishes for a speedy recovery to those injured.

The East African Legislative Assembly Parliamentary (EALA) Games, which bring together parliaments from eight East African Community (EAC) states: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, DR Congo, South Sudan, and Somalia is expected to take place in Mombasa from December 6 to December 18.

The EALA games was established by a resolution of the 4th EAC Bureau of Speakers held in 2009. The meeting resolved to hold Inter-Parliamentary Games for East Africa Community Partner States on an annual and rotational basis with the aim of building relations between the East African Community Legislative Assembly (EALA) and the Parliaments of the East African Community region.

EALA games to be hosted in Mombasa

Wetangula who is President of the Bureau of Speakers of the East African Parliament, and the host of the event said that regional colleagues are already in Mombasa, and President William Ruto will officially open the games on December 7.

According to Wetangula the games are part of the bigger picture in ensuring that regional integration is achieved.

The National Assembly Speaker travelled with Kenyan MPs in the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) as they travelled to Mombasa noting that this was in line with austerity measures set by Ruto.

“In line with the austerity measures set by President Ruto, we have opted to travel by the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) instead of flying, setting an example of fiscal responsibility,” Wetangula said.
