‘Tabia Za Wakenya’ Back on YouTube After Four Years

Popular Genge artist Mejja’s song ‘Tabia Za Wakenya’ has been restored on YouTube after being taken down four years ago over a copyright claim.

The song, which had garnered 2.2 million views,  had been taken down after an upcoming artist accused Mejja of sampling his song.

The upcoming artist who is identified as Kevin Ochieng wrote a WhatsApp message saying that he had given up the song in good faith.

“Kumbusheni Mejja kuwa ngoma yake tabia za Wakenya nimemrudishia online roho safi. (Remind Mejja that I have returned  his song ‘Tabia Za Wakenya’ online in good faith,)” stated the artist.

‘Tabia Za Wakenya’ was pulled down in June 2021.

In 2021, Kevin who hailed from Mathare at the time claimed that he had recorded the song with his producer only to see the song later on Mejja’s platforms. He accused the singer of collaborating with producers to steal the song.

The Genge singer was then sent an email by YouTube informing him of copyright infringement and suspension.

Mejja refutes copyright claims

In response, Mejja refuted the claims terming them ‘hateful allegations’. He also shared a clip of the said song adding that the said dong does not resemble his song.

“Hate on another level, I am the same person helping new artists. If this is meant to slow me down, I will not stop releasing music till I die,” stated Mejja on his social platforms.

The song gained popularity among fans fast for its nature. The song talks about the typical behavior of Kenyans which makes the song resonate with the Kenyan audience.

Mejja is a renowned singer and songwriter known for his unique style of music that entails storytelling in a humorous way. He is considered a pioneer of Genge music which is a blend of Kiswahili and Sheng.
