Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has debunked a viral social media post claiming she was dropped from Nigeria’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) squad for refusing to give in to demands from corrupt football officials.

The controversial post, circulated by a verified Facebook account impersonating the defender, alleged that she was omitted from the team because she refused to offer “something” in exchange for her call-up.

The fake statement read in part, “I have just been excluded from the squad for the upcoming WAFCON. By certain corrupt officials who demanded something from me that I could not and would never offer… If my talent, hard work, dedication and commitment to representing my country are not enough to earn my place in the team, then perhaps it is time for me to step back.”

Plumptre moved swiftly on Tuesday to distance herself from the fabricated statement, clarifying that she does not operate the verified Facebook page and urging fans to flag it.

“This Facebook account is still causing problems … Please report. Crazy how it’s verified,” the defender wrote on her official Instagram Story. She further put the rumors to rest on her verified X (formerly Twitter) account, writing simply, “Not at all true…”

Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade also stepped forward to support her teammate and shield the team from unnecessary distractions ahead of the tournament, calling on football fans to report the impersonator.

“Fake account alert. Someone is out there impersonating my teammate @ashplumptre on Facebook,” Ajibade posted on X. “The account is fake. Please support and report this account on Facebook. Thank you!”
