Super Falcons face Egypt in must-win WAFCON clash

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will take on Egypt on Wednesday in a decisive Group C fixture at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with qualification for the quarter-finals still at stake.

The nine-time African champions go into the encounter with three points from two matches after bouncing back from an opening defeat to Malawi with a hard-fought victory over Zambia. The results leave Nigeria second in Group C, level on points with Zambia but behind leaders Malawi, who have won both of their opening games.

A victory over Egypt would take the Super Falcons to six points and keep them firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stage. However, their final position in the group will also depend on the outcome of the other Group C fixture between Malawi and Zambia.

Should both Nigeria and Zambia win, Group C would end with Nigeria, Malawi and Zambia all tied on six points. In that scenario, the standings would be determined using the head-to-head results among the three teams, with goal difference and goals scored in those matches used if necessary.

A draw against Egypt would leave Nigeria on four points, with qualification then hinging on Malawi avoiding defeat to Zambia. A loss, however, would end the Super Falcons’ campaign.

Egypt have already been eliminated after suffering defeats in their opening two matches but will be looking to finish the tournament on a positive note.

The Super Falcons will therefore need to secure all three points against the North Africans while hoping results elsewhere go in their favour as they pursue a place in the WAFCON quarter-finals and continue their bid for a record-extending 11th continental title.
