Speed Reveals Record Broken in Kenya During His Africa Tour

American streaming sensation IShowSpeed has revealed that Kenya has set a new record on his ongoing Africa tour. According to Speed, Kenya is the country where he has gained the highest number of subscribers in a single livestream.

The YouTube star made the revelation on Sunday, January 11, while leaving Nairobi National Park, where he had been streaming live to hundreds of thousands of viewers

Speaking during the broadcast, Speed told his audience that no other country he had visited on the tour had generated as many new subscribers in one stream as Kenya.

“We are about to hit 47.9 subscribers in this stream. I don’t think you understand how crazy that is. No other country so far in this whole tour has been able to gain this amount of subs in this one stream. Kenya is so far number one,” he said.

At the time of the remarks, Speed’s Kenya livestream had attracted more than 180,000 concurrent viewers just two hours after going live. He began the stream with 47.72 million subscribers and had risen to 47.913 million by the time of publication, representing a gain of over 190,000 new subscribers within a single broadcast.

Speed landed in Kenya earlier on Sunday as part of his 28-day Africa tour dubbed “Speed Does Africa,” one of the most ambitious creator-led livestreaming projects ever attempted.

The tour is expected to cover 20 African countries, with Speed streaming daily while immersing himself in local culture, food, sports and tourism.

Speed visits Kenya

His Kenyan stream began at Upper Hill School, where he interacted with students and met members of the Kenya Rugby team, as well as javelin world champion Julius Yego. The visit quickly drew online attention, with clips from the encounter circulating widely on social media.

Speed then headed to a local restaurant where he tried his hand at cooking ugali, a Kenyan staple, before proceeding to Kenyatta Market, where he purchased a customised Kenyan top for Ksh20,000. At both locations, he sampled a variety of local delicacies, including nyama choma, kachumbari, and mukimo, while interacting with curious onlookers who gathered to watch and record his visit.

The streamer later toured Nairobi National Park, feeding animals at the Animal Orphanage, including giraffes and a lion, an experience that became one of the most-watched segments of the livestream.

He then had lunch at Carnivore Restaurant before continuing his broadcast inside a customised “nganya” matatu, offering viewers a glimpse into Nairobi’s iconic public transport culture.

From the moment he began moving around Nairobi, Speed was trailed by growing crowds, with dozens of Kenyans stopping to film him on their phones, shout his name and follow his convoy through the city.

In several locations, particularly along busy roads and market areas, bodaboda riders were seen riding alongside his convoy, keeping pace as they recorded the livestream.

At Kenyatta Market and Nairobi National Park, curious onlookers gathered in large numbers, many chanting his name and waving at the camera as the livestream rolled on. The attention often spilled onto nearby streets, with pedestrians and riders briefly slowing traffic as they tried to get a glimpse of the streamer or appear on his broadcast.

His movements across the city repeatedly turned into impromptu meet-and-greet moments, with fans documenting his visit in real time and sharing clips across social media.

Speed’s Kenyan stop comes midway through a highly structured, sponsor-backed 28-day Africa tour, during which he has been moving rapidly between countries while livestreaming for global audiences.

Prior to arriving in Kenya, the streamer had already toured Angola, Eswatini, South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Rwanda, producing long-form IRL streams that combined street-level interactions, cultural immersion, and high-risk stunts.

Rise to global prominence

Born Darren Watkins Jr, the You Tube star rose to prominence through livestreams defined by unpredictability, exaggerated reactions and constant audience interaction.

While he initially streamed video games, particularly NBA 2K, his appeal quickly evolved into full-scale IRL content, amplified by TikTok clips that turned spontaneous moments into viral global trends

He has also made a name for himself in the sports world after emerging as former Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo’s most ardent fan, and also wholly immersing himself in the world of sports – football, marathon sprints and strenuous physical exercises.

Unlike pre-recorded travel content, Speed’s Africa tour has unfolded entirely in real time, allowing viewers to experience unfiltered interactions, technical glitches and unscripted encounters as they happen.
