“Six-Point Blow” — Leicester City Docked Points For Financial Breaches, Slide Toward Championship Relegation Zone

Leicester City have been handed a six-point deduction after an independent disciplinary commission found the club in breach of football’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, plunging the former Premier League champions into a fresh relegation battle in the Championship.

The English Football League confirmed that the sanction takes immediate effect, reducing Leicester’s points tally from 38 to 32 and leaving the managerless club hovering just above the relegation zone on goal difference. The Foxes now sit 20th in the table and are at risk of dropping into League One if results do not improve.

In a statement, the EFL said the commission determined that Leicester breached financial regulations during the three-year reporting period ending with the 2023–24 season. After reviewing the findings, the EFL board ratified the recommendation that six points be deducted from the club’s Championship total.

The Premier League explained that the case originated from an earlier EFL investigation before Leicester’s promotion to the top flight in 2024. Jurisdiction later shifted to the Premier League following an arbitration ruling in March 2025, which confirmed the league had authority to pursue the case. Leicester were subsequently referred to an independent commission in May 2025.

During hearings held in November 2025, Leicester challenged the applicability of the rules and the commission’s power to impose sanctions, including claims that the regulations breached competition law. Those arguments were rejected.

The commission found that Leicester exceeded permitted financial losses by £20.8 million over the relevant assessment period between 2022 and 2024. It also ruled that the club failed to submit its annual accounts to the Premier League within the required deadline, constituting an additional breach.

However, the panel accepted some of the club’s accounting arguments and noted that Leicester’s improving financial position served as a mitigating factor when determining the penalty.

With the deduction now applied, Leicester face mounting pressure on and off the pitch, having already lost their last two league matches. The sanction intensifies concerns over a possible relegation to League One unless results improve in the coming fixtures.
