For many Kenyans, the name Kibaki is closely associated with national politics in the country. However, for Sean Andrew Kibaki, the grandson of the late former President Mwai Kibaki, his career path has taken a notably different direction.

While many expected him to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps by either seeking a role in Parliament or showing interest in politics, Sean Andrew has instead chosen a path entirely outside the political arena.

In a country where political dynasties often emerge through name recognition, his choice of profession can be seen as a quiet rebellion. Here, Times Digital Kenya takes a closer look at Sean Andrew Kibaki’s career choice, one that stands apart from his grandfather’s political prowess.

Career Away from Politics

Growing up as the grandson of Kenya’s 3rd President, there were many expectations on Sean Andrew, especially in the country’s political scene. However, he has focused his professional career in the fashion world, which is mostly driven by trends and urban youth culture.

Through his modelling and digital influence, Sean Andrew has signed with creative agencies like Art Mashariki, where he has worked on several high-end fashion campaigns in Kenya.

Apart from fashion and modelling, Kibaki’s grandson is also involved in mental health advocacy. In this field, Sean Andrew has had first-hand experience with depression after the loss of his grandparents and has since been an advocate for the mental health of other youths.

“I was also bullied a lot in school and I didn’t have anyone to talk to and the fact that I went through depression that I almost took my own life. Such things are what motivated me to be a psychologist because I wanted to be able to help people with mental health problems.” he disclosed in an interview.

On top of that, he is an actor and has previously featured in a number of plays, including The Money That Made Him Poor, which was staged at the Kenya National Theatre.

“Even though I’m very shy, I am an actor, a model, and a social media marketer. I made my acting debut last year in a play called ‘The Money That Made Him Poor’ at the Kenya National Theatre,” he said in an interview with The Standard.
