Ghanaian Afro-pop musician Kelvin Agyekum, also known as Kurl Songx, has opened up about the controversies that emerged following Sarkodie’s verse on his hit track, ‘Jennifer Lomotey’.

It will be recalled that Sarkodie, in the song which was released in 2017, referenced Krobo women and their perceived promiscuity, echoing a well-known folklore about young women from the Krobo region

In his words: ‘Krobonii baa papa a ahweneɛ da ne sisi, Komfo Anokye de adwaman abɔ no dua,’ which translates to, ‘A beautiful Krobo lady with beads on her waist; she has been cursed with promiscuity by Komfo Anokye.

While these words sparked debate and discussion among listeners, the reaction was particularly strong among the Krobo community.

Speaking in an interview on Onua FM’s Adwuma Adwuma with Felicia Osei, Kurl Songx revealed that some chiefs and elders of the Krobo land expressed their discontent regarding Sarkodie’s lyrics in the song.

He detailed that a meeting was convened with some Krobo elders at a hotel in East Legon to address the situation constructively.

“I got to understand that it’s part of the work. We met them and solved it amicably. Together with Sarkodie’s late lawyer, my manager and we talked about it. We met I think in East Legon and we explained to them that this is not personal, its art,” he said.

In response to the concerns raised, Kurl Songx clarified the context behind Sarkodie’s lyric. He asserted that Sarkodie’s words were not intentional and he did not intend to tarnish the reputation of Krobo ladies.

“Thanks to them, somebody else would not have understood because it was very sensitive. Sarkodie’s word were out of arts not to just tarnish someone’s image,” he added.
