‘Resignation Looms’ — Tuggar Set To Quit As Foreign Affairs Minister To Pursue Bauchi Governorship As Tinubu’s March 31 Exit Deadline Bites

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, is expected to resign from his position to pursue the Bauchi State governorship ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sources familiar with the development indicated that Tuggar’s anticipated exit is in compliance with a directive issued by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, mandating all political appointees seeking elective offices in 2027 to resign on or before March 31, 2026.

The directive was confirmed in a statement by Dewan Goshit, Head of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).

Tuggar’s planned resignation comes shortly after the 2026 National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), where most members of the party’s National Working Committee were returned unopposed. The development has since shifted attention to cabinet members reportedly nursing political ambitions.

Supporters of the minister from Bauchi State, who attended the convention, disclosed that a formal declaration of his governorship bid is imminent, citing increasing political backing for his candidacy.

Tuggar, a former member of the House of Representatives representing Gamawa Federal Constituency between 2007 and 2011, also served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Germany from 2017 to 2023 before his appointment as Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2023.

With the resignation deadline drawing closer, focus remains on other political appointees expected to step down in line with the presidential directive as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
