When we arrived at the Rat Temple in Baner, Rajasthan. There was a strange smell in the air, a mix of excitement and a little bit of fear. Even though I was a bit unsure at first, the caretaker, Gajendar, welcomed us kindly. He showed us around the temple's winding hallways, which were full of rats. 

Respecting the Unexpected

We all see rats as pests, but not the visitors to this Rat Temple. People in this temple see them as special. They offer the rats food like cheese, sweets, and milk as a way of showing respect. Gajendar, who is a devout Hindu, follows his religion's traditions and believes the rats might be the spirits of loved ones who have passed away. This is a strange idea to some people, but it's important to Gajendar.

Understanding the Story

To figure out why the Rat Temple is so special, we need to look back at its history. The temple honors Karni Mata, who happened to be a Hindu goddess known for strength and winning. It's been around for several years.  A story says that Karni Mata's followers were given a special gift: to be reborn as rats. This is why people believe the rats are sacred, and it's a big part of why the temple is the way it is.

Living with the Temple Rats

Gajendar and the others who live at the temple share their home with these rats. It might be uncomfortable, but they believe it's an honor. They see the rats as part of their family. They eat together and sleep at night, even though most people wouldn't want to live like that.

When we were Leaving the Rat Temple, we felt a mix of things: wonder, a little grossed out, and mostly, respect. We might not believe exactly what Gajendar does, but this place showed us how people could be spiritual.
