Raila Odinga’s Receiption in Zimbabwe Amid AUC Chairmanship Election

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has on Monday visited Zimbabwe as he continued to drum up support for his AUC Chairmanship.
The former presidential candidate landed in Harare, Zimbabwe, on Monday evening, where he was given a warm reception, thanks to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Thereafter, Raila Odinga and Mnangagwa held discussions concerning the former’s bid to become the chairperson of the African Union Commission. During the meeting, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) shared his vision for Africa with Zimbabwe’s head of state.

“We landed in Harare, Zimbabwe, today to a warm reception courtesy of H.E. President Emmerson Mnangagwa. It’s been a pleasure sharing with the president my vision for Africa and discussing my candidacy for the AUC Chairmanship.” Raila Odinga

Raila will be seeking to clinch the AUC top seat, but it won’t be an easy task as he will face competition from Mahmoud Ali Youssouf (Djibouti) and Richard Randriamandrato (Madagascar). The election will take place in February, 2025.

The Kenyan candidate has secured the support of East African countries. Additionally, Zimbabwe and Zambia have pledged to support the opposition veteran politician in his AUC chairmanship bid.

He is also enjoying support from several countries in the west and south. As a result, Raila Odinga’s ‘door-to-door’ campaigns have seen him secure a backing of more than 25 countries.
