Prof Farauta Inspects Flood-Ravaged Communities in Adamawa, Warns Against Building on Waterways

Adamawa State Deputy Governor, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, has toured several communities devastated by recent flooding in Yola North and Yola South Local Government Areas, assuring affected residents of the government’s commitment to mitigating the impact of the disaster and preventing future occurrences.

The inspection followed heavy rainfall that triggered flooding across parts of the state, leaving homes and farmlands submerged and forcing many residents to count their losses.

During the assessment tour, Professor Farauta visited Bachure, Kasuwan Katako, the Welcome to Yola Half Cloverleaf Flyover axis, Nyibango and other affected communities to evaluate the extent of the damage.

Addressing residents, the Deputy Governor urged people to stop erecting buildings on waterways and other drainage channels, stressing that such practices obstruct the natural flow of water and significantly increase the risk of flooding.

She sympathised with families affected by the disaster and reaffirmed the state government’s resolve to provide critical infrastructure and implement measures that would enhance the safety and well-being of residents.

The flooding, which has been linked to blocked drainage systems and widespread encroachment on waterways, caused extensive damage to residential buildings and agricultural lands in the affected communities.

Professor Farauta was accompanied on the inspection by the Commissioner for Works, Engr. Suleiman Abubakar, and the Commissioner for Environment, Sadiq Muhammad, who also commiserated with victims and assured them of the government’s continued support.

Some of the affected residents, including Ngozi Thomas and Umar Badau, thanked the state government for the visit and pledged to cooperate with relevant authorities in efforts to prevent future flooding and improve public safety.

The inspection forms part of the Adamawa State Government’s ongoing response to the recent floods, as authorities intensify efforts to address environmental challenges and protect vulnerable communities from recurring disasters.
