Prince William surprised tourists and halted traffic outside Buckingham Palace by transforming The Mall into a street cricket pitch with international cricket stars.

LONDON: Tourists visiting Buckingham Palace received an unexpected royal surprise when Prince William swapped formal engagements for a friendly street cricket match on Tuesday, October 13.

The Prince of Wales transformed The Mall, London’s famous ceremonial avenue, into a temporary cricket pitch, joining some of the sport’s biggest names for an unusual royal sporting appearance.

Prince William plays cricket with international legends

The 44-year-old royal picked up a bat alongside former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, West Indies legend Brian Lara and England cricketer Joe Root.

Other participants included Ajinkya Rahane, Harry Brook, James Anderson, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Danni Wyatt-Hodge.

William demonstrated his batting and bowling skills during the informal match, drawing cheers from spectators who had gathered near Buckingham Palace.

The event briefly interrupted traffic along The Mall, a road normally associated with royal processions and national celebrations.

Tourists enjoy an unexpected royal encounter

Visitors heading towards Buckingham Palace for the Changing of the Guard found themselves watching a completely different royal spectacle.

Prince William spent approximately ten minutes batting before greeting spectators, posing for photographs and taking selfies with members of the public.

Cricket stars praised his enthusiasm, although his bowling reportedly needed some improvement.

The relaxed interaction offered tourists an unusual opportunity to see the future British monarch participating in one of the world’s most popular sports.

Cricket match promotes Earthshot Prize in India

The event promoted the upcoming Earthshot Prize awards ceremony, scheduled for November in Mumbai.

Founded by Prince William in 2020, the environmental initiative recognises innovative solutions addressing major global challenges.

Organisers used cricket’s popularity across Britain and India to highlight the connection between the two countries ahead of the ceremony.

The gathering combined royal engagement, international sporting talent and environmental awareness, turning a familiar London landmark into an unexpected celebration of cricket.
