The Nigerian Presidency has revealed that President Bola Tinubu will submit an executive bill on the new national minimum wage to the National Assembly by next Tuesday.

This move follows an agreement between the President and labour leaders, which established ₦70,000 as the new minimum wage, replacing the expired ₦30,000 rate.

The agreement reached on Thursday at the Aso Presidential Villa in Abuja, marked a breakthrough in the ongoing efforts to improve workers’ remuneration amidst rising living costs.

The meeting, attended by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), was led by their respective presidents, Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo.

According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, the executive bill will be presented to the lawmakers by next Tuesday.

“The minimum wage will reach the National Assembly by Tuesday. He (President Tinubu) told labour in the meeting that it will be ready by Tuesday,” Onanuga confirmed.

Upon approval by the legislative arm and subsequent assent by the President, the new minimum wage will receive legal backing, paving the way for implementation across the country.
