Porsche reported a loss of nearly 1 billion euros, marking its first financial downturn since going public in 2022. This loss was attributed to the company’s expensive decision to switch from electric vehicles to gasoline engines.

The group reported an operating loss of 967 million euros in the third quarter, compared with an operating profit of 974 million euros in the same period last year. In the first nine months of 2025, it made an operating profit of only 40 million euros, compared to four billion euros in 2024

The sports car maker has been a reliable source of profit for Volkswagen Group but has struggled with lower-than-expected demand for electric vehicles, falling sales in China, and increased US tariffs.

“We expect 2025 to be the lowest year. Porsche ‘knowingly accepted’ poor performance as it reorganizes its production line,” said Jochen Breckner.

The company announced last month that it would take on €1.8 billion in costs after ditching the new all-electric car, instead introducing new petrol and hybrid models.

The group in September cut its operating margin forecast for 2025 to zero to two percent, from 14 percent the previous year, as part of its new strategy, which would include bringing to market additional models with gasoline and hybrid engines.

In China, one of the two key markets, sales fell 26 percent in the first nine months. In the US, Porsche saw sales grow by more than five percent over the same period but faces tariffs on all the vehicles it sells on the market due to a lack of manufacturing footprint.
