The involvement of celebrities in politics is often a tricky area. While their popularity can help bring attention to important issues, they are sometimes viewed with suspicion, leading to a lack of respect from politicians who question their motives.

This situation is common in Ghana, where politicians often doubt the intentions of celebrities who enter politics.

Gospel singer and politician, Grace Ashly recently spoke about this issue, sharing her own experiences and how many politicians wrongly assume that celebrities are only interested in financial gain.

The musician, who is now affiliated with Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change, noted that there is a common belief among politicians that celebrities approach them only to seek financial help. She stressed that this belief leads politicians to undermine the dignity of celebrities, assuming their proximity is driven by the desire for monetary favors.

“As an entertainer or celebrity, sometimes when you get close to the politicians, the respect they give you dwindles because they think we are just after money,” she said.

In a candid interview with Yaa Titi on Onua FM’s PaeMuKa, the crooner, who gained fame for composing songs for the Black Stars during their early FIFA World Cup appearances mentioned that she has no regrets about entering politics.

She dismissed the idea that musicians will lose popularity due to political involvement, saying, “If you’re destined to fall, it won’t be because of politics.”

The politician also pointed out that many of her fellow celebrities are involved in politics but choose not to openly declare their affiliations because they want to benefit from all sides. She added that those who fear supporting one politician might cause them to lose favor with others are playing a game of hide and seek.

“Many celebrities can’t come out and do the politics because they want to reap from both caucuses. If you belong to one space, come out for everyone to see,” she emphasized.
