According to Independent Nigeria, Prof. Chris Nwokobia, a former presidential candidate and the convener of the Country First Movement, recently addressed allegations made by Bayo Onanuga, the president’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy. Onanuga claimed that supporters of Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate, were planning to destabilize Nigeria. In a recent interview, Prof. Nwokobia firmly dismissed these claims, suggesting they lacked any basis in truth.

According to Nwokobia, such accusations often emerge from a misunderstanding or misrepresentation by those speaking on behalf of the presidency. He emphasized the importance of these spokespersons serving not only the president but also the nation by being truthful and accurate in their communications. Nwokobia noted that the allegations made by Onanuga do not align with the facts surrounding Peter Obi’s conduct and political activities.

Nwokobia argued that critical opposition is a necessary component of any democratic society and dismissed the notion that Peter Obi has been inciting unrest. He pointed out that since losing the presidential election in February, Obi has not called for protests or any form of public demonstration. This restraint continued throughout the judicial processes that followed the election, highlighting Obi’s commitment to lawful and peaceful engagement.

Further, Nwokobia questioned the logic behind the accusations, noting that it seems improbable for Obi to suddenly decide to incite protests over a year after the election. He emphasized that this timeline makes the claims even less credible, as Obi has consistently shown a preference for legal and institutional avenues for addressing grievances.

In discussing the broader implications of such allegations, Nwokobia stressed the need for responsible communication from those in positions of power. He urged that presidential aides and other officials should be held accountable for statements that could potentially mislead the public or create unnecessary tension. Nwokobia’s comments reflect a concern for maintaining peace and stability in Nigeria while ensuring that political discourse remains truthful and constructive.

He said: There is absolutely no truth to it. Often when those who speak for Mr. President speak, they forget that they must be keen on doing great service not only to the presidency, Mr President but to the nation. There is absolutely no truth to what my elder brother, Bayo Onanuga wrote. You cannot expect to have a country without critical opposition. Peter Obi lost an election last February and he did not call the people out to protest. Throughout the period of the judicial process, he did not call the people out to protest. It is a year and months after that he would sit back to ask the people to protest….Seê_Morê
