PDP Crisis: Alex Ekwueme Contested With Obasanjo, He Lost. He Never Destroyed The Party -Bode George

During an interview that The Sun monitored, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Chief Bode George, cited Dr. Alex Ekwueme as a good example of a God-fearing politician to emulate as a party member.

George was asked if the way forward to solving the internal crisis in the party, especially in Rivers, Ondo, and Edo states, is by wielding a big stick.

In response, he said that using a big stick in politics would upend the foundation. He noted that Dr. Alex Ekwueme was the one who convened the PDP’s founding fathers.

He said that Ekwueme was the organizer and that he had persuaded even those who were widely regarded as his political rivals.

George stated that while Ekwueme and Jim Nwobodo didn’t disagree, he was able to persuade him. They were never, ever political buddies, but they were willing to compromise for the good of the nation.

He was able to persuade both Pa Solomon Lar and Bola Ige in the West. George saw that everyone put aside their own goals and banded together to establish an Iroko political party.

Reflecting on the PDP, George lamented, “And for God’s sake, how long have we been now? Over 20 years, it is still nothing!”

“So he (Ekwueme) was able, and for all the elections that we had in the South, when it was zoned to the South, Dr. Alex Ekwueme contested with President Obasanjo; he declared he lost.”

“He never at any time raised his hands to demonize or to destroy the party. That is a typical example of a civilized God-fearing man.”

George further said, “Look at the petty fighting up and down, and I want to plead; I am getting almost 80, trying to calm the nerves of those who are getting angry, but angry about what?”

“Election is coming. I’ve seen the powerful group put together by the campaign team. I don’t have any quarrels about that. Look at the attitude of Pa Alex Ekwueme.”

“His name would remain in the golden pages of the political history of our country. He never fought for one day to say no; I didn’t agree with everything. I was the one that formed the party. I was the one that was the convener; he didn’t do that.”….Seē _ Morē
