Patriots’ Drake Maye must be best QB in historic 2024 draft class to take spotlight off Mike Vrabel

Mike Vrabel did not make it any easier on Drake Maye this season.

But a New England Patriots offseason filled with off-the-field drama and TMZ headlines can be answered by Maye proving that he’s better than Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels in 2026.

Two years after the new ‘Iceman’ was a lock as the Chicago Bears‘ No. 1 overall pick, Maye has the NFL edge over Bo Nix, Williams and Daniels.

Six quarterbacks were selected in the first round during the 2024 draft.

Yet Michael Penix Jr. (No. 8 overall) is now a backup to Tua Tagovailoa on the Atlanta Falcons, while J.J. McCarthy (No. 10) has been benched for veteran Kyler Murray by the Minnesota Vikings.

Daniels is coming off a bad year in Washington and, like Vrabel, was in the middle of non-team friendly headlines this offseason.

Nix is coming off a frustrating injury that limited the Denver Broncos at the worst possible time, following a 14-3 record and first place in the AFC West.

And while Williams holds the 2024 draft edge in passing yards (7,483) and touchdowns (47), Maye is the only one among the six first-round QB picks to already appear in a Super Bowl and finish second in NFL MVP voting.

It becomes even more promising for the Patriots — who kick off the 2026 season with a Super Bowl rematch vs the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday at Lumen Field — when Maye’s youth (24-years-old) and gradual pro maturation are factored in.

“More comfort in what we’re doing. More command,” said Vrabel, discussing the former North Carolina star. “More understanding. I think there’s probably a comfort level with, once you know your job really really well, you can help other people do their job.”

The 2025 Patriots benefited from initial low expectations and an overall favorable schedule.

The Seahawks led 29-7 in the fourth quarter, while Maye was overwhelmed by Aden Durde’s attacking and selfless Seahawks defense.

“(Seattle head coach) Mike (Macdonald) wanted us to be a connected and tough team, and they really embraced that and they made it a priority,” Durde exclusively told talkSPORT.

“The coaches made it a priority. And we, as a collective, it was a vision we drove towards. And I thought that was different. I thought the way the guys interacted with each other, they loved being with each other on the field and off the field.”

In year three, Maye must again play at an MVP level and prove to his draft critics that he’s ultimately a better QB than Williams, Daniels and Nix.

The 2026 Patriots — who traded for star wide receiver A.J. Brown and signed Christian Gonzalez to a $135m contract extension — open against the defending Super Bowl champs, then face playoff teams in the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills and Chicago Bears before Week 8.

The noise surrounding Vrabel will only grow if New England falls backward this season.

Maye can carry the Patriots and his picked-apart head coach forward by proving he was the best available arm in a loaded 2024 QB class.
