Passport Application in Kenya: Fees, Forms and Requirements

Applying for a Kenyan passport has become easier with the government’s digital services, but the process still requires careful attention to detail.

Whether you are applying for the first time, renewing, or replacing a lost document, the application is completed online and finalized at designated Immigration offices.

The first step is to register on www.ecitizen.go.ke, the government’s official digital platform.

Once logged in, applicants must navigate to the Department of Immigration Services portal and select the passport application form.

Applicants are advised to read the instructions thoroughly before filling in personal details.

Payment for the passport is made online through mobile money, debit or credit card, or internet banking.

After payment, the system generates three receipts and a pre-filled application form, all of which must be downloaded and printed.

The printed documents, along with supporting paperwork, must be submitted in person to Immigration offices in Nairobi (Nyayo House), Mombasa, or Kisumu.

Step-by-step Process

Processing typically takes at least 10 working days for a first-time application and five working days for renewals or replacements, though delays may occur if information is missing or incorrect.

Documents required during submission include:

  • Printed eCitizen application form and receipts
  • Original and copy of birth certificate
  • Original and copy of national ID card
  • Three current passport-size photos
  • Copy of recommender’s ID card
  • Consent letter for minors
  • Parents’ national ID cards (for minors)
  • Old passport for replacement cases

Passport fees are as follows:

32-page Ordinary “A” Series — Ksh. 4,550

48-page Ordinary “B” Series — Ksh. 6,050

64-page Ordinary “C” Series — Ksh. 7,550

East African Passport — Ksh. 990

Diplomatic Passport (48-page) — Ksh. 7,550

Mutilated Passport — Ksh. 10,050

Lost Passport — Ksh. 12,050

For inquiries, the public can contact the Nairobi Immigration office at +254 772 246 669 or the Mombasa office at +254 708 206 206.

Upon completing the application process and paying applicable fees, applicants are required to book an appointment through the eCitizen portal, and select any of the following Passport Processing Centres to submit Passport Applications and enrol biometrics (Photo Capture / Biometric): Nairobi (Nyayo House), Kisumu, Mombasa, Eldoret, Nakuru, Embu, Kisii, Kericho, and Bungoma.

Why You Need a Passport

A passport is a primary form of identification that affirms a person’s citizenship and nationality.

For Kenyans, it serves as official proof of citizenship, recognized internationally, and is required when crossing borders.

Without it, traveling abroad for work, study, leisure, or emergencies becomes virtually impossible.

Beyond facilitating movement, a passport opens doors to a wide range of global opportunities. It allows citizens to access international education, job markets, conferences, and cultural exchanges.

It enhances security by documenting citizens’ mobility while providing protection through consular services in foreign countries.
