Oyo’s Tribute to Ayinde Barrister Draws Praise from Fuji Enthusiasts

Global fans and admirers of late Fuji music pioneer, Dr Sikiru Ayinde Barrister (MFR), have expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Oyo State Government for recognising the music legend’s legacy during the 2025 Egungun Festival held in Ibadan on Thursday.

The recognition, presented by the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatubosun, came in the form of a merit award, underscoring Barrister’s foundational role in the evolution of Fuji music. The commissioner described the late icon as “The undisputed pioneer who gave birth to Fuji music,” affirming his cultural significance in Nigeria’s music history.

Reacting to the honour, the organisers of the Sikiru Ayinde Barrister Musical Festival Forum (BarryFest) praised the gesture as long overdue and deeply meaningful. In a joint statement, Chairman Alhaji Laide Olawumi and Secretary Agbaakin Ademola Adesigbin commended Governor Seyi Makinde for validating Barrister’s legacy at such a prominent cultural celebration.

They noted that Fuji music, as shaped by Barrister, has become a vital source of employment and creative expression for thousands of Nigerian youths, from vocalists and drummers to producers and stage crews.

“We appreciate the Oyo State Government for recognising a man whose impact transcends music. Barrister created a legacy that continues to empower and inspire,” the organisers said.

The group also highlighted the state’s broader efforts to preserve and promote Yoruba cultural traditions through meaningful engagement with arts and heritage. They added that, in the face of revisionist attempts to rewrite the history of Fuji, the government’s action reaffirms the truth of Barrister’s pioneering contributions.

Members of the BarryFest team, including Modinat Ashabi Barrytide, were also present at the Liberty Stadium venue to witness the honour being bestowed.
