Oyo SUG Presidents Applaud Gov. Makinde Giant Strides In Education, Call For Fulfilment Of Promise

The Students Union President of all tertiary institutions in Oyo state has officially congratulated Governor Seyi Makinde landslide victory in the last generation and also his giant strides on education.

In a press release by the students’ leaders, they call on ‘Peoples Governor’ to also fulfilled his promises to students populace in the state.

Among their demands are mobility for students populace, palliative to curtail the effect of fuel subsidy in campuses and appointment of friendly special adviser to Mr Governor.

See the press release below:

His Excellency,
Engr. Oluseyi Makinde
The Executive Governor of Oyo State,
Agodi, Ibadan,
Oyo State, Nigeria.

Dear Sir,

CALL FOR IMMEDIATE FULFILLMENT OF PROMISE

1. We the Council of Students Union Presidents in the various tertiary institutions in Oyo State write to officially congratulate you on your victory during the 2023 general election. The student populace as evident by the results from the various campuses was a big part of this victory, and we are happy to have pitched our tent with you during the general election.

2. The Council equally appreciates you for your student friendly policies. The recent upgrade of the Emmanuel Alayande College of Education to a University, the ongoing construction of a linking road from Ogbomoso to Iseyin for the new LAUTECH Iseyin Campus, and the release of Omituntun Buses to transport citizens from one zone to another at a subsidized price to cushion the effect of the subsidy in which our students are beneficiaries were some of the laudable actions of your administration that we are proud to associate with.

3. Mr Governor, we know you as a promise keeper and that you are Mr Talk and Do, however, we are sad that you have not kept your promise to provide Students’ Union Buses for all Students’ Union Bodies in the State. For over three years, we have been informed through your representatives and even directly from you on several instances and occasions of various timelines for the delivery of the buses, but the promises have not translated into any visible result. Since our silence over the years over this issue has been taken for granted, we have decided to make open our demand. Sir, we call on you with immediate effect to fulfill your promise.

4. We equally frown at the neglect of the Student Community in the distribution of food palliatives in the SAfER Scheme. Your Excellency Sir, we have indigent students on our campuses. Several of our colleagues/ parents/ guardians have lost their means of livelihood due to the removal of subsidies. We appeal to you to disburse food palliative to the Students’ Community.

5. Your Excellency Sir, we are equally using this opportunity to call on you to immediately appoint a Special Assistant on Student Affairs whom students in the state can easily associate with. The delay in the appointment has led to the deprivation of students of the benefits of governance, and we are calling for immediate action while we are trusting that you will appoint the right person.

6. As peace-loving residents of the state, we request for immediate answer to our request. Failure to which may lead to the use of the third ‘C’ of Aluta which is Confrontation. We will mobilize all students across the state for physical protest to register our grievances at the state secretariat and your office in no time.

Aluta Continua!
