Oyo Govt Debunks Viral Entertainment Tax Claim

The Oyo State Government has dismissed a viral post alleging that it plans to impose taxes on social events such as weddings, funerals, and naming ceremonies.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the government described the circulating document as fake and intended solely to mislead the public and tarnish the image of the current administration.

The Commissioner clarified that any official taxation document must contain a Revenue Code for payment, as well as the statutory signature of the Chairman of the Oyo State Internal Revenue Board. He noted that the viral post contained none of these features.

He further pointed out that the address on any genuine official document of such nature must read: “Oyo State Internal Revenue Office,” which was conspicuously missing in the purported circular.

Prince Oyelade urged residents to remain vigilant, warning that as the election period approaches, political actors may increasingly resort to misinformation in an attempt to undermine the remarkable achievements recorded by Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration over the last seven years.

The Commissioner also cautioned bloggers, online publishers, and media outlets against sharing unverified content, emphasizing the need for proper fact-checking before publication.
