OpenAI is officially launching group chats inside ChatGPT, giving users a new way to collaborate inside one conversation with the AI chatbot. The feature is now available globally to all logged-in users, following a short testing period earlier in the month.

With group chats, you can now invite up to 20 people into a single thread and interact with ChatGPT together. This makes it easier to plan events, brainstorm ideas, prepare documents, or work on shared tasks — all with AI support inside the same chat.

How ChatGPT Group Chats Work

Creating a group chat is simple. In the ChatGPT app, tap the “people” icon at the top-right corner. ChatGPT will create a copy of your current chat and let you add people by sharing a unique link. Anyone with the link can join, and they can share it as well.

When you join or start a group chat for the first time, ChatGPT will ask you to set up:

A display name
A username
A profile photo

This makes it easy for others to identify who’s talking inside the conversation.

ChatGPT Knows When to Join the Conversation

OpenAI says it trained ChatGPT to “go with the flow” of group conversations. That means the AI will join the discussion only when needed and stay quiet at other times. If you want ChatGPT to respond directly, simply mention “ChatGPT” in your message.

ChatGPT can also:

React to messages
Reference profile photos
Generate custom images for group members

What You Can Do in a Group Chat

You’ll find settings for managing the group by tapping the group chat icon at the top-right corner. From there, you can:

Add or remove participants
Mute notifications
Set custom instructions for ChatGPT

OpenAI also confirmed that ChatGPT memories from your private chats won’t carry over into group chats, and it will not save new memories based on group interactions.
