Opel published a press release highlighting its wide range of fully electric offerings, but the most intriguing part was the two covered models in the background. These are the upcoming Frontera and next-generation Grandland SUVs, which are coming soon offering both combustion and fully electric powertrain options.

Opel’s existing fully electric lineup includes the Rocks, Corsa, Mokka, Astra, Astra Sports Tourer, Combo, and Zafira passenger vehicles, as well as the Combo Cargo, Vivaro, and Movano LCVs. The obvious gap in the sub-compact and compact SUV segments will soon be filled by the Frontera and the Grandland.

Opel Frontera And Next-Gen Grandland (Spy Shots: Baldauf for CarScoops)

Starting with the Frontera, it has already been confirmed in an earlier teaser as an “exciting SUV” promising to offer a “high level of space and versatility and thus appeal to customers with an active lifestyle and families alike”. The nameplate was originally used by Opel for an Isuzu-based off-roader that was sold between 1991 and 2004. The new iteration will be a lot different, positioned in the upper end of the B-SUV segment and serving as a replacement for the aging Crossland.

As with its predecessor, the new Frontera will be closely related to the next-gen Citroen C3 Aircross that will debut in 2024 with a longer body and a three-row, seven-seater layout. This means it will ride on Stellantis’ new “Smart Car” architecture, offering the option between ICE and electric powertrains for the first time.

Moving on to the Opel Grandland, the new generation has been caught on several occasions by our spy photographers during development testing, but this is its first appearance in an official teaser. The compact SUV will share the STLA Medium underpinnings with the new Peugeot 3008 and the upcoming Citroen C5 Aircross, being available in mild-hybrid and fully electric guises. Unlike its French coupe-SUV sibling, the Grandland will retain a traditional SUV stance. Judging from Opel’s positioning within the Stellantis group, we also expect it to be more competitively priced than the Peugeot.

Opel didn’t give specific dates for the debut of the new Frontera and Grandland SUVs, other than mentioning they will arrive “soon”. Both are expected to go on sale within 2024. As a refresher, the German brand has pledged to go EV-only by 2028, meaning that the ICE-powered / mild-hybrid versions of the newcomers will remain on sale for four years before being discontinued.
