Olivia Hussey, renowned for her iconic portrayal of Juliet in Franco Zeffirelli’s 1968 film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, has died at the age of 73.

Her family confirmed the news on Saturday through a heartfelt statement posted on her Instagram account.

The statement partly read, “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Olivia Hussey Eisley, who went peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on December 27th.

“Olivia was a remarkable person whose warmth, wisdom, and pure kindness touched the lives of all who knew her.”

Born in Buenos Aires to an Argentine opera singer and a British legal secretary, Hussey relocated to London at the age of seven. She studied at the renowned Italia Conti drama school and began her acting career as a teenager.

At just 15, Olivia Hussey delivered a captivating performance as Juliet in the Oscar-winning film Romeo and Juliet, earning her a Golden Globe as “New Star of the Year.” Her portrayal, alongside Leonard Whiting, brought her international acclaim.

However, in 2023, Hussey and Whiting made headlines when they sued the studio over a nude scene, alleging child abuse. Despite initially defending director Zeffirelli’s handling of the scene as “tasteful,” the lawsuit was ultimately dismissed.

Beyond her iconic role in Romeo and Juliet, Hussey established a diverse career, starring in cult classics like Black Christmas (1974) and Death on the Nile (1978), based on Agatha Christie’s novel. Hussey is survived by her husband, David Eisley, their three children, and a grandchild.
