The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has responded to George Akume, the Secretary of the Government of the Federation, saying that he cannot pay his drivers N100,000 in salary.

According to a statement published on Friday by NLC on its official X Twitter, the SGF shouldn’t have made such a comment.George Akume’s purported assertion is deeply troubling, says NLC, because he is responsible for ensuring the smooth functioning of the executive branch, a vital component of any democratic government.

Using the four drivers as an excuse, the Nigeria Labour Congress wondered what the SGF did for a living and why he was getting such a big salary and perks package. In a statement titled “Treasonable Felons And Economic Saboteurs Are In Agbada And Convoys,” the NLC raised questions about the SGF’s operations and the rationale behind their high salary and allowances.

The group questioned the organization’s use of just four drivers.Given the prevalence of individuals with this ideology in positions of authority, shouldn’t we ask ourselves why we exist as a nation? It is disheartening that the SGF, whose job it is to ensure the smooth functioning of the executive branch—a fundamental component of any democratic government—has been caught making remarks that run counter to these long-standing norms and values….See More
