Oando Clean Energy, which is the renewable energy subsidiary of Oando Energy Resources, has recently acquired and put into use 50 new electric buses. The company’s latest move is part of its commitment to support the Nigerian Federal Government’s efforts in transitioning to cleaner transportation options. In a statement released on Sunday, the firm revealed that this expansion is an extension of its earlier promise to deliver 50 electric buses to Lagos State. The announcement was made during the Conference of the Parties (COP28) event in Dubai.

The company has announced that it now has a total fleet of 100 electric buses, which is a significant achievement in promoting environmentally friendly transport practices across the country. This announcement follows the launch of the company’s sustainable transport initiative on May 24, 2023, which included a Proof-of-Concept collaboration with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority.

At a side event in the Nigeria pavilion, the company’s Executive Vice President, Ademola Ogunbanjo, spoke of the successful completion of the 90-day Proof-of-Concept phase.

He said, “During the PoC, we rolled out two electric mass transit buses, and they ploughed four routes covering over 43,800 kilometres, carrying over 73,000 passengers, saving bus operators 21,000 litres of diesel and mitigating 57.8 tons in CO2 emissions within the state.

Ogunbanjo noted, “On the back of the successful PoC and deliberations with several State Governments, OCEL will match the Federal Government’s commitment of 100 electric buses towards reducing the country’s carbon emissions.

According to him, the company’s sustainable transport initiative is now being progressed to a pilot phase of 50 buses and 2,000 buses at full rollout for Lagos State.
