The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the confirmed death of popular actor Alexx Ekubo. The award-winning performer passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026, at the age of 40 after battle with cancer.

Reports indicate that he had been privately managing a health challenge for several months, which led to his recent absence from the public eye and social media.

The news became public on Tuesday as several of his close friends and industry colleagues shared emotional tributes on social media.

  • Funke Akindele expressed her grief on Instagram, reflecting on their close bond: “I tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best… I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together.”
  • Bolanle Ninalowo, currently in the United States, offered prayers for the family, writing: “Rest on, Alex. May God heal your family and us all.”
