Nissan Abandons Plans To Build EV In The United States

Nissan Motor has announced that it no longer plans to build two new electric vehicles (EVs) at its plant in Canton, Mississippi, starting in late 2028 or early 2029. Instead, it will consider producing hybrid SUVs at that plant, starting in 2028.

Nissan’s original plans to start production of electric vehicles at the plant in 2028 have previously been delayed by up to a year due to falling demand. In April 2025, the company pushed back the dates for two electric crossovers, the PZ1K and PZ1J, to 2028 and even suspended production plans for two electric sedans and a smaller electric SUV.

This decision follows the elimination of federal tax credits for the purchase of certain electric vehicles in the United States. Now, those plans have been put on hold indefinitely, meaning the Nissan Group will no longer make any electric models in the US.

However, Nissan will continue to sell electric vehicles in the US market—specifically, the Nissan Leaf model, which is manufactured in a factory in Japan. The company hopes that additional exports of this model will increase EV sales in America. It will also continue to sell the 2025 model year Nissan Ariya in North America, although it decided not to invest in the 2026 version due to uncertain demand.

Meanwhile, the issue of the Canton plant remains. Nissan now believes that hybrids and internal combustion engines (ICEs) will experience greater growth in the US in the coming years, making hybrids the primary focus. There are still no details on what those new hybrid SUV models will look like.
