The Ghana ggovernment has been urged to expedite the passage of the Conduct of Public Officials Bill to curb corruption and improve accountability in the public sector.

It was also called upon to ensure the passage of the Procurement Authority Amendment Bill and the Public Tribunal Bill to strengthen the fight against corruption.

The call was contained in a communiqué presented at the close of the 77th Annual New Year School and Conference in Accra by Professor Simon-Peter Kafui Aheto, an Associate Professor of Information Technology and Education at the Department of Distance Education, University of Ghana.

He said reducing corruption was central to achieving national development goals.

“To envision ‘the Ghana we want’ corruption must be reduced, if not eliminated. Currently, many citizens perceive reported economic figures as disconnected from their reality. This trust gap requires openness, data transparency and deliberate public engagement,” he said.

The conference, organised by the School of Continuing and Distance Education of the University of Ghana, was held from January 5 to 8, 2026, and brought together policymakers, academics, industry leaders and development partners.

It was held on the theme, “Building the Ghana We Want, Together for Sustainable Development.”

Prof. Aheto said formal platforms should be established to enhance youth participation in policy formulation and implementation at the district, regional and national levels.

He urged the Government to strengthen local governance by developing accurate data systems for district assemblies and modernising community vigilantism through the use of technology.

Prof. Aheto noted that such measures would improve participation, transparency, and effective decision-making at the community level.

He also called for the broadening of the tax base through the digitisation and formalisation of the informal sector.

“Measures of accountability must be strengthened to engender trust and patriotism,” he stated.
