The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Plateau State Chapter, has called for the immediate passage of the Special Seats Bill (HB1349), which is currently before the National Assembly.

In a press statement issued on Monday and signed by Chairperson Grace Akwe Gotip and Secretary Mwuesse Adem, the association declared full alignment with the position of its national leadership, which is advocating for the swift consideration and approval of the proposed legislation.

NAWOJ highlighted that the persistent underrepresentation of women in Nigeria’s legislative chambers represents a major democratic deficit that demands urgent correction.

The group emphasised that inclusive governance is not a privilege for women but a constitutional and developmental imperative essential for national progress.

Describing the Special Seats Bill as a vital corrective measure, NAWOJ said it seeks to rectify historical imbalances and reinforce the strength of democratic institutions.

“The Bill is not about privilege; it is about justice and fairness. It is about correcting longstanding inequalities and building a more inclusive democracy,” the statement read.

The Plateau Chapter specifically urged all Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members representing the state at the National Assembly to rise above partisan considerations and support the Bill promptly and without dilution.

It also appealed to members of the Plateau State House of Assembly to publicly endorse national efforts aimed at improving women’s political representation across the country.

As part of its ongoing advocacy, NAWOJ disclosed plans to engage key stakeholders and lawmakers in the state, launch media campaigns to raise public awareness about the importance of the Bill, and collaborate with women’s groups, civil society organisations, and community leaders to broaden the campaign’s reach.

The association pledged to maintain sustained public engagement until concrete legislative progress is achieved, stressing that the current moment is decisive for the future of Nigeria’s democracy.

“A vote for the Special Seats Bill is a vote for equity, inclusive governance, and a stronger Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
