NASS COLLATES OPINION ON ELECTORAL REFORMS

The National assembly joint committee on electoral matters is engaging stakeholders as it amends the electoral act to improve Nigerias election management, enhance transparency and strenghten political accountability.

Some highlights of the proposed amendment include recognition of prisoner voting rights, early voting for those on essential duty,electronic transmission of results, setting up election tribunal, tougher sanctions for electoral offences, as well as mandatory audit of INEC.

The amendment is also proposing an increase for campaign expenditure from the current 5 billion naira to 10 billion naira for Presidential campaigns, from 1 to 3 billion naira for governorship campaigns, and from 30 to 60 million naira for chairmanship campaigns.
