The Upper West Regional Command of the Narcotics Control Commission has intercepted two trucks carrying unapproved and potentially hazardous substances at Kaleo in the Nadowli District of the Upper West Region.

According to a statement shared on February 23, officers acted on intelligence about vehicles suspected of transporting illicit consignments to neighbouring Burkina Faso.

The two Rhino Kia trucks, with registration numbers GS 5699-18 and GC 1871-11, were stopped and searched.

The operation led to the discovery of 40 drums of sodium cyanide, 58 cartons of foreign cigarettes and 182 cartons of unapproved pharmaceutical products.

Authorities said the items were being transported without the necessary documentation or official clearance.

Sodium cyanide is a highly toxic chemical commonly used in mining and industrial processes. Its movement without proper authorisation raises serious safety and environmental concerns, particularly for communities along transit routes.

The drivers and their mates have been handed over to the Ghana Police Service in the Upper West Region for further investigations and possible prosecution.
