Mosiria Shares Raila’s Message to Kenyans Ahead of Mazingira Day

In a timely update amid swirling rumors about his health, ODM leader Raila Odinga has sent a reassuring message to Kenyans through Nairobi’s Chief Environment Officer, Geoffrey Mosiria. On October 9, the outspoken Nairobi County official took to his social media platforms to share that he had spoken with the former Prime Minister, who appeared to be in good spirits.

According to Mosiria, Raila encouraged Kenyans to plant trees in large numbers on October 10, a day set aside to celebrate the nation’s Environment Day. Mosiria’s post was accompanied by a photo of the two men smiling in a lush garden, holding a soccer ball.

“I’ve just spoken with Baba, and he is in high spirits. He has urged all Kenyans to plant trees in large numbers tomorrow during Mazingira Day. Kesho unapanda miti ukiwa Wapi?” Mosiria said on X (formerly Twitter)

The Call to Environmental Action

Odinga’s message fits perfectly with the spirit of Mazingira Day, which is a public holiday in Kenya that celebrates protecting the environment. Celebrated on October 10 every year, the day promotes actions such as planting trees to help fight climate change and rebuild landscapes.

This year’s theme, “Citizen-Centric Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship,” emphasizes community involvement, with a focus on planting fruit trees for food security, biodiversity, and local climate improvement.

The government has issued directives to amplify participation. Kenyans are urged to return to their primary schools to plant trees and lead clean-up campaigns, an initiative dubbed “Turudi Primo!”.
