Mexico Approves Reno Omokri’s Ambassadorial Appointment After Eight-Month Wait

By Tgnews Reporter

Mexico has formally approved the appointment of Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador to Mexico, ending an eight-month wait for diplomatic clearance following President Bola Tinubu’s decision to nominate him for the position.

Omokri announced the development on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, in a post on his X account, confirming that the Mexican government had granted the diplomatic approval known as agrément.

According to him, José Manuel Briseño Flores, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Mexico in Abuja, formally presented the approval to Babagana Wakil, Director of Protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The clearance paves the way for Omokri to serve as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mexico, with concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

Expressing gratitude over the development, Omokri acknowledged the Mexican government’s approval and described the formal communication as a significant step towards assuming his diplomatic responsibilities.

“To God be the glory, the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the United Mexican States in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, today in Abuja delivered the agrément from the Government of the United Mexican States accepting me,” he said.

President Tinubu had, in March 2026, approved the deployment of 65 ambassador-designates and high commissioners to various countries, with Omokri assigned to Mexico.

However, his posting remained pending because the Mexican government had not communicated the formal consent required to complete the appointment process.

The delay was subsequently acknowledged by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in August, when it disclosed that Mexico and Japan were among the countries yet to grant diplomatic clearance for two outstanding ambassadorial appointments.

The ministry said it was engaging the relevant authorities in the affected countries to secure the necessary approvals and expressed confidence that the outstanding clearances would be obtained.

With Mexico’s approval now secured, the uncertainty surrounding Omokri’s posting has been resolved, although the remaining steps in the diplomatic accreditation process must still be completed.

Agrément is the formal consent a receiving country grants before accepting a diplomat nominated by another country as its ambassador. It is a standard requirement in international diplomatic relations and must be obtained before the appointment can proceed to its final stages.
