Messi rules out coaching, eyes club ownership after retirement

Inter Miami star Lionel Messi has revealed that he has no intention of going into coaching when he eventually hangs up his boots, instead expressing a strong interest in football ownership and the business side of the game.

Speaking at the American Business Forum this week, the Argentine icon explained that he is already preparing for life after football and is keen to follow a path similar to that of Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham.

“I like to start looking at what could come next. I like the business world; I want to keep learning. I’m just getting started with it,” Messi said.

“I’ve always been 100 per cent dedicated to my profession, but I know that something else is coming—another world—and little by little, I’m getting involved.”

The World Cup winner made it clear that a role on the touchline does not appeal to him.

“I don’t see myself as a coach. I like the idea of being a manager, but I’d prefer to be an owner. I’d like to have my own club, start from the bottom, and make it grow,” he added.

Messi also highlighted his desire to contribute to youth development, stressing that ownership would allow him to have a long-term impact on young players.

“To be able to give kids the opportunity to develop and achieve something important. If I had to choose, that’s what would appeal to me most.”

The comments offer a rare glimpse into Messi’s post-playing ambitions, suggesting his influence on football may continue well beyond the pitch—this time from the boardroom rather than the dugout.
