Kamau Karori is a Senior Counsel, a Senior Partner, and head of the Dispute Resolution Practice Group at IKM Advocates.

He has been involved in the most significant and precedent-setting commercial disputes in Kenya’s High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court.

Kamau Karori is a legal expert in commercial litigation and international arbitration and is currently a Senior Partner at IKM Advocates, which is a member firm of DLA Piper Africa, where he leads the Dispute Resolution Practice Group. 

Early Life and Educational Background

Kamau was born and raised at the foot of the Cherangany Hills in Trans-Nzoia County, Kenya.

He is an alumnus of St. Christopher’s Secondary School in Trans Nzoia County, where he did his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

The lawyer attended the University of Nairobi, where he earned his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) between 1990 and 1993.

In 1995, he completed his Diploma in Law at the Kenya School of Law.

Karori obtained a professional qualification as a Certified Public Secretary in Kenya.

He was conferred the status of Chartered Arbitrator by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK) in 2020, following his admission as a Fellow (FCIArb) in 2013.

Karori was officially admitted to the Bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya in 1996, and he has maintained strong ties to his roots, acting as a philanthropist involved in the infrastructural development of various institutions in Trans Nzoia.

Kamau Karori’s Career

Kamau Karori’s career spans nearly three decades, evolving from a local litigator to a globally recognized specialist in complex commercial disputes and investment treaty law.

He is a Senior Partner at IKM Advocates, a member of DLA Piper Africa, where he joined forces with James Maema and Stewart Iseme in 2002 to form the firm. He currently heads the Dispute Resolution Practice Group.

Before the merger that created IKM, he founded and managed his own firm, Kamau Karori & Co. Advocates.

Karori is a fixture at the Supreme Court of Kenya, where he served as lead counsel for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) during the 2013, 2017, and 2022 Presidential Election Petitions.

The lawyer regularly represents blue-chip companies, state corporations, and high-net-worth individuals in litigation involving banking, intellectual property, and tax law.

Achievements

Karori is the first Kenyan to sit on an active ICSID tribunal, after being appointed as an arbitrator to a tribunal under the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), which is a World Bank-funded institution.

He gained international acclaim for successfully defending the Government of Kenya in the $2 billion Cortec Mining investment claim, a case that threatened a significant portion of the national budget.

The senior counsel is a member of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Court of Arbitration and the Nairobi Centre for International Arbitration (NCIA).

In 2022, he was conferred the highest professional rank for an advocate in Kenya, Senior Counsel.

Chartered Arbitrator (C.Arb) – he achieved the highest grade from the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

The Trans-Nzoia-bred leader has served as the Chair of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Kenya Branch, and has held various committee roles within the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).
