Scotland’s World Cup camp in Charlotte has opened with an unexpected controversy, as Norway officials launched a public attack on Steve Clarke over a cancelled training match.

Norway head coach Stale Solbakken labelled Clarke “unprofessional” after Scotland pulled out of a reserve fixture between the two nations ahead of the tournament.

Team manager Brede Hangeland went further, describing the decision as “embarrassing” and “weak” in comments that quickly circulated in the media.

Three Norwegian reporters arrived at Scotland’s Charlotte press conference hoping for a fiery response, but captain John McGinn delivered something far more composed.

“I would say 75% of the squad haven’t seen it,” McGinn said of the Norwegian anger, smiling as he spoke, clearly unbothered by the furore.

McGinn pointed to the late withdrawal of Billy Gilmour as the key reason behind Clarke’s cautious approach to squad management this week.

“It had a huge impact on everyone. We didn’t want to lose another. We had a few niggles, not everyone’s been training,” he explained, making a measured case for Scotland’s professionalism.

He added that any nation in a similar position would have done exactly the same, saying Norway would cancel a bounce match without hesitation if Erling Haaland or Martin Odegaard were at risk.

Away from the Norway spat, McGinn spoke warmly about the 25ft mural painted in his honour on the side of a house in his home town of Clydebank.

“It’s a bit strange, but obviously it filled me with pride to see it,” he said, noting that all his cousins, nieces, and nephews had gone to take a look.

The mural joins tributes to Scott McTominay and Andy Robertson, completing a trio of paintings honouring Scotland’s most prominent players ahead of the World Cup.

McGinn revealed the house belongs to the family of a former schoolmate, Jake Anderson, adding a personal touch to an already heartfelt tribute.

“Hopefully it can inspire young kids from Clydebank to know that one of their own is on the world’s biggest stage,” he said with genuine conviction.

The 31-year-old also reflected on his infamous schuhplattler dance at Scotland’s Euro 2024 base camp in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which backfired badly after Scotland’s poor tournament showing.

“Do I regret that? Maybe,” he admitted, before suggesting there would be no similar theatrics before this World Cup gets underway.

He was clear that his focus this time around would be entirely on performing when it matters most, having felt he underperformed at his previous two major tournaments.

“In these tournaments, you need your big players to come up with big moments,” he said, adding that he feels more ready than ever to deliver that.

McGinn arrives at this World Cup as Scotland’s fifth-highest all-time scorer with 20 goals, sitting just two behind Lawrie Reilly and three behind Hughie Gallacher in the historical rankings.

He also comes into the tournament as a Europa League winner with a Champions League place secured for next season, giving him the strongest platform of his career.

Recalling advice he received early in his career at St Mirren, McGinn said former player Stevie Thompson told him “It’s your jersey now, keep it,” a message that has stayed with him ever since.

He is now passing that same message to Scotland’s youngest squad members, including teenagers Tyler Fletcher and Findlay Curtis and 20-year-old Ben Gannon-Doak.

“The young players aren’t here to make up the numbers. They’re here to make an impact and start their own careers with Scotland,” McGinn said with the authority of a natural leader.
