Mbah Abolishes Ticket Fees for Keke Operators in Enugu, Extends Operations to 10pm

Enugu State Governor, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has abolished ticket fees paid by commercial tricycle operators across the state and extended their operating hours to 10pm.

The governor announced the measures on Saturday, October 17, 2026, during a one-million-man march organised by the Tricycle Riders Union at Okpara Square, Enugu.

The abolition of ticket fees is expected to provide financial relief to thousands of commercial tricycle operators who depend on the business for their livelihoods and provide essential transportation services to residents across the state.

Under the directive, the daily ticket and levy charges previously paid by operators are to be discontinued with immediate effect.

The development is expected to reduce the financial burden on tricycle riders, improve their earnings and support small-scale transport businesses operating within Enugu and its surrounding communities.

In a related measure, Mbah announced an extension of tricycle operating hours to 10pm, allowing operators to transport passengers later into the evening.

The extension is expected to benefit residents who work late, traders, business owners and other commuters who rely on commercial tricycles for transportation.

The adjustment will also provide additional time for residents to move around and conduct their legitimate businesses, potentially supporting evening commercial activities across the state.

The previous restrictions on tricycle operations during evening hours had been associated with security considerations. The extended operating window is expected to improve transportation access while the relevant authorities continue to address public safety concerns.

The announcements underscore the state government’s efforts to ease the cost of operating commercial tricycles and improve transportation services for residents.

Tricycle operators play an important role in Enugu’s urban transport system, particularly in providing last-mile connections between residential neighbourhoods, markets, workplaces and major transport routes.

The removal of ticket fees and extension of operating hours could therefore have implications for both operators’ livelihoods and residents’ access to affordable transportation.

The measures were announced at a rally attended by members of the Tricycle Riders Union, although further details on the implementation of the new directives were not immediately available.
