Man convicted, fined for stealing GH¢353,471 from employer

A sales boy who stole GH¢353,471 from his employer under the pretext of using the money to marry was convicted and fined by the Adentan Circuit Court on Friday.

Alfred Mensah, the sales boy, was charged with stealing.

Standing trial with him were Mary Asantewaa, a trader, and Emmanuel Okyere, a pastor, who were charged with abetment of crime, to wit stealing, and dishonestly receiving stolen property.

Also charged with dishonestly receiving stolen property were Samuel Dika, Miriam Okai and Vida Yeboah, a 59-year-old trader.

Apart from Mensah, all the accused persons pleaded not guilty. The court admitted them to bail in the sum of GH¢353,471 each, with justification.

Mensah pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing.

The court ordered him to refund the stolen money and sentenced him to a fine of GH¢12,000 or, in default, serve two years’ imprisonment.

Chief Inspector Maxwell Lanyo, leading the prosecution, said the complainant, Mr Gideon Offei Tieko, was a businessman who dealt in plumbing materials at Lakeside and Kantamanto.

The prosecution said Mensah had worked for the complainant for the past seven years.

During 2024 and 2025, the complainant detected that money had been missing from his business but could not identify which of his workers was responsible.

On June 17, 2025, the complainant arrested Mensah and escorted him to the Lakeside Community 8 Police Station after his business partner, Rejoice Maadey, informed him that Mensah had collected plumbing materials worth GH¢56,000 on his behalf but had failed to pay.

During investigations, Mensah admitted the offence and stated that he had given the stolen money to Asantewaa and Samuel Dika after informing them of his intention to marry.

According to him, Asantewaa and Dika had promised to find him a suitable wife.

Further investigations revealed that the two later informed Mensah that the woman he intended to marry was ill and suffering from a kidney condition, and persuaded him to provide financial support.

Mensah subsequently sent various sums of money through Asantewaa.

The prosecution said investigations established that Asantewaa and Dika later told Mensah that the supposed bride had to be flown to South Africa for further treatment because of the severity of her condition.

Mensah eventually transferred GH¢353,471.50 through Asantewaa’s mobile money account.

Asantewaa was later arrested and mentioned Dika as her accomplice, who was subsequently arrested.

The prosecution said Asantewaa further implicated Okyere, Miriam Okai and Vida Yeboah as beneficiaries of the stolen money.

The court heard that investigators retrieved GH¢46,000 from Vida Yeboah.
