Lookman

Atalanta head coach Raffaele Palladino has disclosed that Ademola Lookman personally requested to leave the club in order to complete a move to Atlético Madrid.

Lookman sealed a permanent transfer to Diego Simeone’s side on the final day of the winter transfer window, with the Bergamo-based club receiving a reported €40 million for the Nigerian international.

Speaking to Sport Mediaset, Palladino explained the circumstances surrounding the winger’s departure.

“Lookman had this offer towards the end of the transfer session. He asked to leave and wanted a change of scenery, so the club made him happy,” Palladino said.

The Atalanta boss added that the timing of the transfer meant there was little opportunity for formal goodbyes, but insisted the club respected the player’s wishes.

“We were going to an away match when he left, so there wasn’t much time to say goodbye, but we wish him all the best for the future,” he noted.

Despite losing one of his most influential attackers, Palladino stressed that he remains satisfied with the depth and quality of his squad.

“I am very pleased with the team at my disposal. It is what we needed to face three tournaments. I am fortunate to have a strong and competitive squad, with many players of quality and technique, so I am spoilt for choice on who to start tomorrow,” he added.

Lookman departs Atalanta after an outstanding spell in Italy, during which he scored 55 goals and registered 27 assists in 137 appearances across all competitions. His time in Bergamo was highlighted by a historic Europa League final hat-trick, and he now begins a new chapter in La Liga with Atlético Madrid.
