Laws that anger opposition excite me – Akpabio confesses

President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has revealed that he feels encouraged when opposition figures react angrily to laws passed by the Senate.

Akpabio made the remark on Saturday in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, while speaking during a reception held for Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

According to him, criticism from the opposition often signals that lawmakers have made the right decision.

“Each time we make a law and the opposition frowns, I get excited that I’ve made the right law,” he said.

Akpabio also dismissed threats by some opposition figures to boycott the 2027 presidential election, saying such statements indicate a lack of readiness for the contest.

“Yesterday I saw one man shouting on TV because of the Amended Electoral Act, saying we’re likely to boycott elections,” he said.

“My response was tell the truth, you’re boycotting the elections because you’re not ready. If you are ready you won’t boycott.”
