LAS Commemorates Intn’l Day of Solidarity With Palestinian People, At UNGA- India Welcome The Efforts

New Delhi: League of Arab States Mission Commemorated the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on Tuesday at Palestine embassy.

The League of Arab States (LAS) shares a common mission with the United Nations (UN): promoting peace, security and stability by preventing conflict, resolving disputes and acting in a spirit of solidarity and unity. In doing so, the two organisations also work together to expand economic opportunity, advance respect for human rights and build political inclusion.

The meeting commenced with silence in favour of civilians killed in Gaza, followed by the address by Arab League’s Ambassador to Delhi, Yusuf Mohamed Jameel, who underscored the enduring commitment of Arab nations to the Palestinian cause.

Palestinian Ambassador to India, Adnan Abu Al-Haija also addressed the gathering. He said, “It’s nothing new from the Arab countries, to be at the Palestine embassy in solidarity… Their support started 75 years ago for the Palestine cause; they all have been supporting the Palestinian cause.” 

LAS Ambassador Yusuf Mohamed Jameel, echoed the sentiment, underlining the responsibility to address the challenging circumstances faced by the people in Palestine.

He further stated, “we join to express our solidarity with the Palestinian people, when they are facing a war for their existence, and a challenging time…it’s our duty to reflect on this tragedy, to end the suffering of Palestinian people.”

On the sidelines of the solidarity meet, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Djibouti’s envoy responded the media.

In response to a question on the proposed visit of the Ministerial Committee mandated by the Joint Arab-Islamic Extraordinary Summit, Saudi Arabia’s ambassador Saleh Eid H. Al-Husseini said, “This delegation has a mission to reach all important capitals, to explain the need for peace, and the need to have a ceasefire, because if you don’t a support a ceasefire, it means more killing, big need for ceasefire…”adding, “tour is still undergoing. India is an important country, and also expecting from India to play a major role for supporting peace and stability in the global system.”

A delegation of Islamic and Arab nations are on a tour of the five permanent United Nations Security Council member states.

Their stated goal is to bring a ceasefire to the war on Gaza, allow more humanitarian aid to reach the people there and ask the five council members to support the Palestinians in achieving an independent state.

While, Egypt’s ambassador Wael Mohamed Awad Hamed said,  “We are supports of the right of Palestinians, there right to determine own future, and we have been forefront of Arab and Islamic countries calling for this…need to have sovereign state for the Palestinian people”.

On potential spill-over from Gaza into Egypt, he rejected the idea, asserting, “The idea of displacing the Palestinians is completely refused, we saw that in 48, 67 and the idea of displacing the Palestinians into Egypt is not something that is acceptable, not acceptable to Egypt, Arab and also to Palestinians, because they know the ramifications of this.”

Djibouti’s envoy, Isse Abdillahi Assoweh, echoed the similar sentiment. After commemorating the  International Day of Solidarity with Palestinian People,Djibouti’s envoy stressed the importance of seeking a solution for two states to ensure peace. 

While responding on India’s stance, Djibouti’s envoy further said, “India is a big country whose voice can be heard all over the world; we are hoping that India will take the step and ask for a ceasefire.”

However, earlier to this while speaking at United Nations General Assembly, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ruchira Kamboj also said that India advocates for the resumption of direct negotiations towards establishing a sovereign, independent and viable state of Palestine.

Speaking at the UNGA informal discussions on the humanitarian situation in Palestine, Kamboj said, “India’s consistent position of achieving a just, peaceful and lasting solution to the Israel-Palestine issue. India has always advocated the resumption of direct negotiations towards establishing a sovereign, independent and viable state of Palestine.”

Kamboj, welcoming the international efforts to ensure further de-escalation of the conflict, also affirmed that India opposes terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and is clearly against violence.

She said, “India welcomes all efforts by the international community that strive towards a de-escalation of the conflict and enables the delivery of urgent humanitarian assistance to the people of Palestine.”

She stated, “We are also firm in our commitment to provide humanitarian aid to the people of Palestine and have already delivered 70 tonnes of disaster relief materials including 17 tonnes of medicines and medical supplies in two tranches and our humanitarian support continues.

Similarly, India continues to play an active role as a Member of the Advisory Commission of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).”

Local Gaza authorities on Monday said the death toll of Palestinians from deadly Israeli attacks on the enclave now exceeds 15,000, in addition to thousands of others still missing under the rubble.

In a statement, the Gaza-based Government Media Office said the death toll includes 6,150 children and 4,000 women in addition to untold numbers of corpses scattered in the streets.

It added that there are also some 7,000 missing people under the rubble, including 4,700 children and women.

Israel launched a massive military campaign in the Gaza Strip following a cross-border attack by Hamas on Oct. 7.
