Kenyan tycoon David Langat eyes 2027 Governor bid in Nandi

Kenyan businessman David Langat is weighing a jump into elective politics, saying he could seek a governorship in 2027 if residents want him to.

Langat, the chair of DL Group of Companies, told mourners in Mosoriot, Nandi County, that his “bearing” will be determined by local sentiment. The billionaire investor—whose portfolio spans agribusiness, real estate and logistics, including stakes such as the Koisagat Tea Factory in Nandi Hills—said his priority remains the private sector but left the door open to a run.

“I don’t speak a lot. My focus now is business and working for the people,” he said, adding that voters should judge leaders by delivery, not rhetoric.

Two counties appear in play. In Nandi, Governor Stephen Sang’ is serving his final term, creating an open race in 2027. In neighboring Uasin Gishu, any bid would have to navigate an incumbent, Governor Jonathan Bii, and a seasoned field that has previously included businessman Zedekiah “Buzeki” Bundotich. Langat said he would consult locally before making any move.

A frequent presence in Rift Valley political circles and a known ally of President William Ruto, Langat would enter with name recognition, fundraising muscle and deep ties to local business. His comments signal that succession maneuvers in the region are already under way as aspirants test messages and alliances ahead of 2027.
