The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has resigned from office amid mounting political tensions and allegations raised by the Kano State House of Assembly.

The development was confirmed on Friday by his spokesperson, Ibrahim Shuaibu, who disclosed that the resignation had been formally communicated.

“Yes, it is true. The deputy governor has resigned from his position,” Shuaibu said, declining to provide additional details on the circumstances surrounding the decision.

Although no official reason has been publicly stated, the resignation follows a period of strained relations between Gwarzo and the Kano State House of Assembly. The lawmakers had recently levelled a series of allegations against the former deputy governor, including claims of misconduct and concerns related to the discharge of his official responsibilities.

Sources within the Assembly indicated that the lawmakers had begun preliminary steps that observers interpreted as a possible prelude to disciplinary proceedings, raising speculation about an impending political showdown within the state’s executive leadership.

The development also comes against the backdrop of recent political realignments in the state following the reported defection of the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to the All Progressives Congress. The move has triggered significant shifts in the political and administrative structure of the state government.

In the wake of the evolving political landscape, the governor has initiated a series of administrative changes aimed at restructuring the state’s governance framework. Among the changes was the removal of the state’s Head of Service, Abdullahi Musa, as part of broader efforts to reposition the civil service for improved efficiency and discipline.

Similarly, the state government recently relieved the Commissioner for Investment, Commerce and Industry, Shehu Wada Sagagi, of his appointment, citing ongoing restructuring efforts to strengthen service delivery and streamline operations across ministries.

Political observers say the latest developments appear to reflect a broader strategy by the administration to consolidate its position within the new political alignment while recalibrating the state’s governance structure to reflect evolving priorities.

While details of the allegations earlier raised against Gwarzo remain unclear, sources within the Assembly had indicated that the matter was under legislative scrutiny before his resignation.

Efforts to obtain further clarification from the Kano State Government were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

Gwarzo’s resignation is expected to trigger constitutional procedures regarding the appointment of a new deputy governor, subject to nomination by the governor and confirmation by the Kano State House of Assembly.

Analysts note that the development could further reshape the political landscape in Kano as the state navigates ongoing political alignments ahead of future electoral contests.
