The United States Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Thursday, January 9, 2025 in honour of former President Jimmy Carter.

The US Mission in Nigeria made the announcement in a post on X, DAILY GIST reports.

“We remember former President Jimmy Carter, a tireless advocate for peace, democracy, and human rights,” the post reads.

“As the first US President to visit Nigeria, he strengthened US-Nigeria relations and supported Nigeria’s democratic process. His legacy continues to inspire us.”

In an official White House statement on December 29, 2024, on the passing of Carter, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden said: “To honor a great American, I will be ordering an official state funeral to be held in Washington D.C. for James Earl Carter, Jr., 39th President of the United States, 76th Governor of Georgia, Lieutenant of the United States Navy, graduate of the United States Naval Academy, and favorite son of Plains, Georgia, who gave his full life in service to God and country
