JUST IN: Fire guts section of Dangote Refinery in Lagos

On Wednesday afternoon, June 26, 2024, a part of the Lagos-based Dangote Refinery caught fire, setting off an alarm throughout the area.

Witnesses in adjacent neighborhoods reported seeing enormous smoke plumes and loud noises coming from the refinery.

A fire broke out in the refinery’s effluent facility around midday. Furthermore, video footage circulating on social media shows dense black smoke coming from the impacted area of the property.

Another video indicated that the fire did not affect most of the facility, with engineers on-site watching the smoke climb into the air.

At the time of writing, emergency responders such as agents from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) were not yet on the scene.

Aliko Dangote owns the Dangote Refinery, which is a major player in Nigeria’s oil sector and set to be the world’s largest single-train refinery.

Further investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the incident and analyze its impact on the refinery operations.
